History of RodriguesRodrigues, named after the Portuguese explorer Diego Rodriguez, is the smallest of the Mascarene Islands. With a peak elevation of approximately 355 meters, it is located 560 km east of Mauritius island, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It is 109 km² in size, and surrounded by a coral reef. In the 10th century the island has been visited by the Arabs as they have been known to visit the Mascarene Islands. But it is certain that they visited Rodrigues in the 12th century because the island of Rodrigues appeared on a map drawn by the geographer Ash-Sharif al-Idrisi and Rodrigues was named as Dina Moraze.Click for more |
